According to data provided by the ARCC to the Council for Commmunity and Economic Research, the cost of living index for Warren and Washington Counties in the third quarter of 2008 is 110.00 on a scale where 100 is the national average. This quarterly Cost of Living analysis compares costs in 315 metropolitan areas for such things as: groceries, housing, utilities, health care, transportation and more. The metropolitan area with the highest index in this analysis is Manhattan, New York, with a 224.2 index while the lowest is Martinsville-Henry County, Virginia, with an 86.5.
Regionally, the Warren-Washington County index of 110 compares as follows: Ithaca, New York, 103.8; Plattsburgh, New York, 99.3; Rochester, New York, 103.6; Fitchburg/Leominster, Massachusetts, 105.3; Hartford, CT, 120.2; and Burlington, VT, 117.6. This index is based on more than 50,000 prices covering almost 60 different items for which prices are collected quarterly by chambers of commerce like the ARCC, economic development organizations or university applied economic centers in each participating metropolitan area.
