Region's Cost of Living Remains Above Average

In the second quarter of 2009, the Warren and Washington County region's Cost of Living is a 108.7 where 100 is the national average. This Cost of Living comparison involves data collected by chambers of commerce and economic development agencies in 320 metropolitan statistic areas in the US and can be used to measure relative price levels in the participating regions. The composite index is produced by the Council for Community and Economic Research and includes data on pricing of grocery items, housing, utilities, transportation, health care and a range of miscellaneous goods and services.

The Warren and Washington County Cost of Living Index has consistently remained between 106 and 110 for the past several years. The second quarter 2009 rating of 108.7 for our region can be compared with the following regions in the Northeast that also participate in this national index: Ithaca, NY, 103.5; Plattsburgh, NY, 103; Syracuse, NY, 100; Rochester, NY, 99.5; Manhattan, NY, 217.5; Burlington, VT, 119.9; Hartford, CT, 119.2; and Williamsport, PA, 100.9. The data required to be included in this quarterly national index is compiled by the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce.
