AREA CREDIT UNIONS RAISE $8,172 FOR KIDS AT REGIONAL HOSPITALS

Glens Falls, NY (February 3, 2011): Thanks to the generosity of members from three regional credit unions, the 2010 Credit Union Care for Kids Campaign raised $8,172 to benefit pediatric programs at four area hospitals: Glens Falls Hospital, Saratoga Care, Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital (Schenectady) and Seton Health/St. Mary’s Hospital (Troy). Credit Union Care for Kids is a statewide community involvement program of the Credit Union Association of New York, Inc. (CUANY) and its goal is to raise money for children’s hospitals and pediatric units throughout New York State. • Saratoga Care’s proceeds will be used toward pediatric care at the hospital’s free clinic scheduled to open in 2013.
• Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital’s support will be used to purchase a pediatric AED (automated external defi brillator) at the hospital’s Schenectady office.
• Seton Health/St. Mary’s Hospital’s donation will be used for Seton Health’s newly relocated Clifton Park Pediatric Center. The Center will purchase educational toys and activities for the waiting rooms that will engage children and their parents in thoughtful and hands on play.

Credit unions from the Southern Chapter of the Adirondack District of the CUANY, Inc. who raised funds for the 2010 campaign include: Hudson River Community Credit Union; Saratoga’s Community Federal Credit Union; and TCT Federal Credit Union. Can't Make It Up

Every once in a while something happens that, despite your renown for storytelling, cannot be embellished or made better. This was the case with a recent email we received after our Career Experience Day. Let us share with you the email in its entirety:

MR Shimkus,

-Thanks for having us participate in the Job Experience event again! I
think the students had a blast and learned something in the process. I
sent a couple of photos to the Post Star and to our state website for submission. The flight simulator is awesome, it costs more than a real Blackhawk (16mil) at 16.5 mil. Each student
"flew" for about a half hour and there were only a couple of crashes. Lots of smiles.

Thanks again-HOOAH!

Grand Opening of Johnny Rockets in Queensbury

Johnny Rockets employees are busy putting the finishing touches on the restaurant, mastering the menu, and preparing to deliver the magic of the unique Johnny Rockets "experience". The restaurant’s much anticipated grand opening and media preview will be held on June 17th beginning at 11:30am. However, the buzz has already begun! The first 50 customers through the door at Johnny Rockets will have the chance to win free hamburgers for a year. In addition, Glens Falls radio station WCKM 98.5FM will broadcast live from the event.

“We are thrilled to see Johnny Rockets open at the Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark,” said Don McCoy, President of The Great Escape Properties. “The good old-fashioned Johnny Rockets theme will appeal to the local community and to guests of The Great Escape Properties. The family – friendly atmosphere and classic all – American food is sure to be a hit.”

The North Country’s first Johnny Rockets restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the general public and to guests of the Great Escape Properties. “The decision to add Johnny Rockets was simple,” said Jim Evans, the new Senior Foods Manager of Johnny Rockets. “The Johnny Rockets restaurant combined with the hotel and theme park offerings creates a unique setup and great added value for guests,” said Jim Evans, the new Senior Foods Manager of Johnny Rockets. And, in recent weeks, Johnny Rockets has actually more than tripled the workforce formerly employed at Trapper’s. They Did it for the Kids

Behan Communications, the Glens Falls Hospital Foundation, The Chronicle, The Post-Star, and Trampoline Design came together Friday night at Christ United Methodist Church to put on a show to benefit Feet First, a local organization dedicated to ensuring that every child has shoes that fit and are season appropriate.

Representatives from these companies performed to a packed house, alternately eliciting reverent silence and raucous applause. The event raised over $700 for Feet First and demonstrated that Maury Thompson and Gordon Woodworth can both deliver a message with their voices as well as their keyboards. Mark Behan was no slouch as the master of ceremonies, delighting the crowd with witty commentary on a host of issues. Trampoline Design and Behan Communications proved that their creative extends beyond standard print and web materials and can be showcased in the finest performance halls. Below enjoy a clip, poorly shot from a back row seat, of Glens Falls Hospital's Ray Agnew doing his rendition of a classic U2 number.

Collaboration, it adds up.

The ARCC has made no secret that it believes that in many cases Option C is the way to go:

Cooperation
Consideration
Consolidation
Collaboration

We've gone so far as to co-mingle our Annual Dinner with the Tri-County United Way's annual auction. February, 2nd, 2008 our organizations will convene at The Sagamore for an incomparable evening of bidding for charity, culinary delight and creatively making 2 for the price of 1 work for everyone.

Turns out the communication(s) community has a way with C, too.

Perhaps a high c, maybe a clarinet, or even a contralto.

Gordon Woodworth of The Chronicle and Maury Thompson of The Post-Star are in cahoots. They've stealthily made their way through the city charging (coercing) area communications professionals with performing musical numbers at a coffee house style evening on Friday, October 12th at Christ Church United Methodist.

Included in the event:
Grand Master of Ceremonies
Mark Behan, President and Founder, Behan Communications.

Performers:
Ray Agnew, Executive Vice President of the Glens Falls Hospital Foundation
Maury Thompson, Reporter, The Post-Star
Gordon Woodworth, News Editor, The Chronicle
The Design Tramps, Trampoline Design
Mik Bondy and a heretofore unknown singing talent on staff, Behan Communications

And many more.

The event, sure to be wildly entertaining, has been created to benefit Feet First, an organization dedicated to making sure that all kids have the shoes they need to get through the season. For more information about the Community Mission Coffee House presenting Media Night please contact Maury Thompson at thompson@poststar.com.

From Wiggles to Wedgies

From Wiggles to Wedgies: The Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom Announces Plans for New Rides & Attractions in 2008

The Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom today announced plans to add several new major attractions for the 2008 season. Next spring, the park will unveil Wiggles World, a themed children’s area based on The Wiggles, the most popular children’s entertainers in the world, featuring rides, shows and attractions the entire family can enjoy together. At the same time, the park will also debut a thrilling new waterslide, called the Wild Wedgie, in Splashwater Kingdom.

“The Great Escape has historically been a true family theme park, and as our plans for 2008 make clear, we are continuing that tradition,” said Don McCoy, President of The Great Escape Properties. “The addition of Wiggles World and the Wild Wedgie represents our commitment to the diversification of family entertainment at The Great Escape, where we are dedicated to offering excitement and thrills for families and guests of all ages!”

Get Ready to Wiggle at The Great Escape!
At a cost of $3 million, the new children’s area will include specially-themed Wiggles rides, including The Big Red Car and The Big Red Plane rides, as well as a new retail location, The Wiggles Gift Shop, and a restaurant called the Yummy Yummy Café. In addition, The Wiggles themselves –Sam, Murray, Jeff and Anthony – will make an appearance and perform at the park on a to-be-announced date in 2008!

The new Wiggles World themed children’s area will be inhabited by The Wiggles’ cast of supporting characters: Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dog and Henry the Octopus, who will pose for photos with guests and perform daily in the “Get Ready to Wiggle” show in the all-new Wiggles Theater.

“Wiggles World” is designed to leverage The Wiggles’ vast recognition and status among children ages 2-6. Since 1991, The Wiggles have performed to more than 1 million audience members a year. To date, they have sold more than 22 million DVDs and videos and more than 5 million albums worldwide, and The Wiggles’ successful television show has been broadcast on Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney since 2002.

Wiggles World will be the theme park’s second themed children’s area, following on the heels of LOONEY TUNES NATIONAL PARK, which was added in 2005.

‘Wild Wedgie’ to Debut in Splashwater Kingdom

The Wild Wedgie, an entertaining waterslide with a whimsical name, will debut at The Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom in 2008 to provide thrill seeking guests with an exhilarating water ride!

The new waterslide is expected to generate even more excitement in 2008 than its predecessor, Tornado, did in 2007. The new waterslide will appeal to teens, tweens, and everyone who loves an exciting waterslide experience. Wild Wedgie will complement Tornado, Captain Hook’s Adventure River, Paul Bunyan’s Bucket Brigade, the 500,000 gallon Lumberjack Splash wavepool, and all of the thrilling attractions in Splashwater Kingdom, making for an unforgettable waterpark experience for the whole family.

More information about Wiggles World and the Wild Wedgie waterslide will be released during a construction tour that will be offered to press in spring 2008.

The existing Field House was constructed in 1921 near the pond and served as a warming hut for ice skaters, until it was moved to its current location. An addition was built in 1931. The building, which has fallen into disrepair, is used year round.

Plans for the new Field House include basement space with potential utilization as dressing rooms for performers from the amphitheatre performances, such as the recent GE sponsored concerts. There will also be increased energy efficiency and heightened curb appeal for this edifice along one of the City’s primary corridors.

The united way

ARCC members and the students in the Apprentice Adirondack Style program continue to demonstrate the power of participation. The latest challenge for the students was to create a t-shirt design for the Tri-County United Way. The t-shirts will be used as a sales and marketing tool as the organization works toward achieving its drive for $1 million.

Deanna Endieveri of Sperry Advertising met with the students to go over of the design of the t-shirts which will be produced by Sperry. Her enthusiasm for collaboration and to create a quality product was clear as she discussed the design with the Money Makers team.

An integral part of the process of this program is the interaction with local business people. The opportunity to work with professionals and to witness their ideas being taken and fully realized is something that will inform the way these students approach their future decisions.

The ARCC is proud to have members such as Sperry Advertising and the Tri-County United Way, who are willing to take the time to impact the lives and thinking of our region's young people.

If you would like to find out more about how to support the Tri-County United Way through the purchase of one of the student designed, Sperry produced t-shirt, contact Amanda Magee at 798-1761.

Money as Instructional Tool

Ok, so not really, but Hudson River Community Credit Union along with Todd Shimkus, ARCC President and CEO, found a way to use hypothetical money as a mechanism for learning...if only property taxes could be paid from a hypothetical account. The kids learned a great deal as they wowed the thre delighted ladies from HRCC: Dorrie Phillips, Linda Dickie and President, Sue Commanda.

This week at the Apprentice, our two teams selected new project managers and one changed their name to the Money Makers vs. The Mighty Purple Pandas. The challenge was to create a board game for use by the Hudson River Community Credit Union in their efforts to increase the financial literacy of area students. The Money Makers created a game called “Moolah – The Game of Money” and the Panda’s created a game called “Bankrupt.”

Moolah is played by rolling the dice and landing on squares, winning is accomplished by landing on more earning squares than spending squares. To make money, players babysit, mow lawns, get a birthday gift, receive a visit from the tooth fairy, hold a yard sale, receive an allowance, etc. To spend money, players buy an i-pod, candy, and go to the movies. As money is earned players can go back to the Credit Union in the middle of the board to deposit earnings. The first player to save $500 wins. If any player accumulates debt of more than $500, they lose and are eliminated from the game.

Bankrupt has players select a business to open - - car dealer, lawyer, construction or restaurant - - and receive a $50,000 loan from the credit union. Each player travels through their own path to profitability by rolling the dice. They are directed by the board to take cards at random spaces that identify ways to either make or lose money. The goal is to collect enough cards that add revenue to your business, that when you reach the end of the path to profitability you have paid off the original loan. If you still have debt at the end of the path, you go back to the beginning. The game is won when all four players have become profitable and the winner is the player with the most profit after paying off their loan.
