Deleted Signs - - An Advocacy Initiative

The members of the Mayor's Parking Committee stood around the table looking at the large map of Glen Street. The map specifically identified all of the street signs that would be added once the reconstruction project is complete. The map also showed existing signs many of which were marked "D" for deletion as we were told.

The signs marked for deletion included signs for the Hyde Collection; the Chapman Historic Museum; the World Awareness Children's Museum; and Civic Center parking. The Chamber's representative at the meeting asked: "What happens to the signs marked for deletion?" The surprising response was that the contractor simply takes them away.

While perhaps not practical in the same place after construction, the Chamber representative suggested that these signs are expensive to replace and might be useful elsewhere in the City. Just three years ago, the Chamber worked with the Hyde Collection, the Chapman Museum, and the Charles R. Wood Theater to install highway attraction and trail blazing signs at a cost of $10,000. Given this experience, it seemed prudent to see that these organizations, the City or someone locally in a position to reuse them elsewhere get the "Deleted" signs rather than the contractor.

The suggestion was made. It appeared to be favorably received. Now let's hope it gets done. I'm glad the Chamber was there!
